I was born in Bristol and now live in North Somerset. I draw my inspiration from the world around me and in particular the natural world, preferring wherever possible to paint 'en plein air'.
I have been painting all my life and discovered my deep passion for watercolour in my late teens. No other medium moves me quite like it. However, I don’t like to be pigeon-holed into one genre or another. I want to be free to explore and try all sorts of styles and mediums.
The most important tool to me is my brush. True mastery of brushstroke is magical. The brush becomes an extension of the artist's arm. The art I admire most shows skill of hand, not to paint in infinite detail, but to simplify and to dance across the page.
There is no one way to explain exactly what it is about a subject that inspires me. It might be the colour or the light, but I also love texture and pattern. Usually it will be a magical combination of all or some of these. And sometimes it's quite simply the story.
To me the inspiration in my subject comes first. Then I explore the challenge of how to portray not only beauty as I see it, but also some essence of how it makes me feel.
